Northwest Explorer

Our Northwest Explorer program is an adventure-focused aspergers camp that includes backpacking and whitewater rafting. With nine campers, three staff and the North Cascade Mountain Range as the magnificent setting, an exciting experience is guaranteed.  Although backpacking may seem to be an inherently individual activity, we operate our backpacking trips as a group experience, with team being crucial to the expedition’s success.  As the group works together to move toward their destination, each individual member of the group has to consider not only their own personal choices, but also consider the needs of others throughout the trip.  Backpacking thus becomes an opportunity for perspective taking, and allows campers to practice the consideration of others during the program. Ownership of this expedition is fostered through the constant empowerment of campers by staff.  Campers participate in all aspects of the program, from cooking to cleaning to route finding to setting up and breaking down camp.  As one of the many rewards for completing such an adventure, the team earns a thrilling whitewater trip down the spine-tingling class III Wenatchee River, a Northwest favorite.

Our Goals, beyond having ridiculous amounts of fun with newly made friends, are to help develop social and self confidence while providing an exciting, challenging and unforgettable adventure experience.

Our Staff support  teens through compassionate strength-based perspectives, believing every adolescent has many gifts and unique qualities to offer. Staff honor campers for every positive effort they make, and gently encourage campers to work toward challenging themselves.

Our Philosophy supports the making and maintaining of healthy relationships,  being compassionate toward others, developing the ability to treat each struggle in life as an opportunity, and doing the hard work of growing and developing both as an individual and as a member of a community.
